LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN; MESSAGE FROM THE OFCC PRESIDENT CIRVALINA LONGBOY

FROM THE SOUVENIR BOOK PUBLICATION SEPTEMBER 5, 2008
OFCC INSTALLATION - ALA MOANA HOTEL

OFCC PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We are most appreciative of your presence tonight. You will witness a double-header event: First, the crowning of our new 2008 Miss Oahu Filipina; secondly; the swearing in of the Oahu Filipino Community Council [OFCC] officers and president's of OFCC member unit organizations.

This year our Miss Oahu Filipina 2008, Miss Krystle Acido, won the most coveted title as Miss Hawaii Filipina 2008. Tonight we are crowning our new 2008 Miss Oahu Filipina Bianca Castillo.

We, the officers and members of OFCC, are faced with the challenge to show the stalwart founders of OFCC that we are on track in accomplishing the goals and missions they envisioned 49 years ago:
  • To promote and perpetuate the Filipino cultural heritage
  • To help unite all Filipino organizations for the common welfare of the Filipino community
  • To encourage the Filipinos to develop a strong sense of responsibility and a greater participation for the betterment of the Filipino community and the Island of Oahu as a whole.

We will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the founding of OFCC next year. It is therefore befitting that our theme tonight is "Make It Happen". We celebrated the 100th year of the arrival of our forefathers [the Sakadas] in Hawaii in 2006 show casing their rise from the lowly and menial labor to the achievements of their children and childrenss' children as illustrated in the life story of our First Filipino Governor, Former Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano. The OFCC goals and missions parallels the vision of our forefathers. Our efforts will gravitate towards projects for the youth for they are our hope. We look forward to collaborating with Filipino CommunityCenter, Inc. with their culture programs geared for the youth.

We owe it to our children's children to pass on the legacy of hard work, determination and perseverance. We can proudly say that OFCC, through its many projects such as the Miss Oahu Filipina Scholarship pageant, collaboration with MOTTEP, voter registration and advocacy groups and participation in the legislative process, to name a few, we have been able to continue the visions of our forefathers. We salute our founders for without their wit and ingenuity, we would not be able to gauge our progress in our island paradise.

We thank all generous sponsors and sipporters. Please continue to assist us make the vision of the OFCC founders come to fruition. I would alos like to personally express my gratitude to all the officers and members who have consistently committed and dedicated time, effort, talent and resources to accomplish our goals. To their families, we appreciate your understanding and most importantly, your cooperation.

Signed:
Cirvalina R. Longboy

OFCC ON THE THRESHOLD OF A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

FROM THE SOUVENIR BOOK PUBLICATION SEPTEMBER 5, 2008
OFCC INSTALLATION - ALA MOANA HOTEL

OFCC on the threshold of a golden anniversary

An anniversary [from the Latin anniversarius, from the words for year and 'to turn', meaning [re]turning yearly], is a day that commemorates a past event that occurred on the same day of the year.

Quinquagenary: fifty years of giving, fifty years of leading.

In June of 1959, the Oahu Filipino Community Council [OFCC] was established. Born on the premise of camaraderie, beneficence, accountability and tradition, the Council took on the gargantua task of mobilizing existing duly organized group of Filipino americans on Oahu Island. It became the federation of eighty-five bonafide member units. Its mission was lucid and clear cut: to unite all Filipinos in Oahu and develop in them responsibility and participation in perpetuating Filipino culture, all for the common welfare of the community.

So for the next forty-nine years, OFCC withstood growing pains and cooped with the challenges of an ever changing mind-set brought about by immigration, brain drain or simple aversion to change. Thus these realities fortified the Council's governance and effectively pushed the mission and vision making the Oahu Filipino Community Council as one of the most dominant Filipino institutions in the Island of Oahu and perhaps in the state of Hawaii.

Make It Happen.

In order to keep up with the pace of the next fifty years, what must the present and the parade of future officers of OFCC do?

Leadership development! With an aging baby boomer membership, the Council must engage in recruiting younger generation of leaders. It should encourage awareness of the nobility of their heritage. It should instill in them pride of their culture and traditions and most of all inculcate respect for what and who they are. Then from this roster, leadership skills must be identified and eventually developed into full potentials.

Leadership development refers to any activity that enhances the quallity of leadership within this organization. The key concepts in this exercise are experiential learning, focusin on the learning process either by seminar-type sessions of person to person tutoring; self efficay or nurturing their belief about their capabilities; and visioning, developing their ability to formulate a clear immage of what they aspire to become. Once the Council develops this caliber of leadership, it can no plan succession that will insure its ability to face the tests of the next fifty years.

As the Council tiptoes on the edges of a new era, the new slate of officers must be unfaltering in their resolve to take action before its too late.

Lets make it happen.

UFCH Awarded the 2008 Banaag Presidential Award

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) has completed its selection of the 2008 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO) and announced the finalists for the 2008 outstanding overseas Pinoys.

The United Filipino Council of Hawaii (UFCH) was awarded the Banaag Award. The Banaag Award is conferred to Filipino individuals or associations for their contributions which have significantly benefited a sector or community in the Philippines, or advanced the cause of overseas Filipino communities. UFCH has done both.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will personally hand-out the awards in a special ceremony tentatively set on December 9, 2008 at the Malacanang Palace. December has been declared as Overseas Filipinos Month in the Philippines. Several officers and directors of UFCH are planning to attend the awarding ceremony.

Through its statewide leadership, the UFCH has developed and organized the Filipinos in Hawaii to come together and build a strong community in Hawaii. Thanks to UFCH’s baniyahan & aloha spirit and its efforts to unite the community and perpetuate and preserve Filipino culture and heritage, the Filipino community in Hawaii is one of the most cohesive and supportive community of expatriates in the world.

“We are pleased to announce that the UFCH has been chosen by the Presidential Commission on Filipinos Overseas as one of the recipients of the Banaag Award for the Year 2008 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas,” said Eddie Agas the current president of UFCH, “I would like to recognize all our present and past officers, directors and members for their outstanding contributions towards the winning of this prestigious award.”

UFCH is the umbrella group of over 350 Filipino organizations in Hawaii and has fostered and developed a well organized Filipino community, a more close-knit and more active community in preserving and promoting Filipino culture and traditions in Hawaii.

“I would like to particularly thank our immediate past president Bryan Andaya, Esq. and long time past president Don Alvarez for their leadership and commitment to the Filipino community,” said current OFCH President Eddie Agas, “We can see farther because we are standing on the shoulders of our predecessors.”

Instituted in 1991, the Presidential Awards is a biennial search to recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for their outstanding contribution to Philippine progress and development.
